Clinton Township Police Department Firearms Application Procedures
Firearms Identification Card and Permit to Purchase a Handgun
- You must be18 years of age to obtain a Firearms ID card and 21 years of age for a handgun.
- Be a resident of Clinton Township.
- You must provide two forms of identification verifying your name and address (i.e. Drivers License, Passport, etc.)
- Fully complete State
Form Application No. STS-3 for a Firearms ID Card and/or a Handgun
Permit. Two (2) copies are required.
- Present your Firearms ID card if you are applying for a handgun permit only.
- References: Complete this section with the names, addresses,and phone numbers of two (2) people who you have known for at least three (3) years, and who are not Clinton Township Police Officers or family members
- It shall be the applicants responsibility to get the reference letters completed and returned. They can be returned by mail, email or dropped off at Police Headquarters.
- Employment Verification: It shall be the applicants responsibility to return the completed EmploymentVerification form.
- Complete the Mental Health Form SP-66 (part 1 only).
- Complete the Clinton Township local background form.
- FINGERPRINTING
- You must be fingerprinted if you have never applied for a Firearms ID Card in the State of New Jersey.
- Applicants can schedule their fingerprint appointments using the MorphoTrak website at www.bioapplicant.com/nj. The website is the best and most readily available method of scheduling, but if necessary applicants can utilize the call center at 1-877-503-5981. Also, note MorphoTrak will accept Visa, Mastercard, Electronic Check and Money Order as payment for fingerprint services. Forms needed for fingerprinting can be picked up at Police Headquarters. You need a case number prior to getting your prints taken. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE POLICE DEPARTMENT DOES NOT FINGERPRINT FOR FIREARMS APPLICATIONS.
- Applicants can only purchase one (1) handgun within a 30 day period.
Request for Duplicate ID Card (Form STS-3):
- An application for a Duplicate Firearms ID Card will be accepted from an applicant who: Has lost his or her Firearms ID Card or whose card has been stolen; has a mutilated card (old card will be surrendered and destroyed); or has a change of name, address, or sex (old card will be surrendered and destroyed, and a copy of the court order or marriage certificate will accompany all request for change of name).
- Please complete form STS-3. 2 copies are required, and the form needs to be completed in its entirety.
- You must complete the Consent for Mental Health Records Search form (SP-66) - link and information are below.
- Bring your Firearms ID card (if applicable), and Driver's License with current address when forms are returned.
- Complete form 212A. The fee is $18.00. Submit a Certified Check or Money Order for $18.00 payable to Division of State Police - SBI. *You may need to be fingerprinted instead* Check when you apply. See fingerprinting section above.
- PERSONAL CHECKS ARE NOT ACCEPTED!
- If you have not lived in Clinton Township at least three (3) years please supply your previous addresses.
- You must not have had your Firearms Purchaser Identification Card revoked.
- You must not have become subject to any of the disabilities as set forth under NJSA 2C:58-3.
Consent for Mental Health Records Search (SP-66)
- Answer all requested information.
- DO NOT SIGN THIS FORM - Police personnel must witness your signature.
